Summary
One of the most influential writers of the 20th century, Jean Genet spent the greater part of his early life in poverty or prison. Filmed in 1985 shortly before the authorÔÇṣ death, this program contains a rare and extended subtitled interview with the man whose plays revolutionized postwar theater and whose novels and film, Chantes dÔÇẠmour, describe with startling directness and lyricism the world of pimps, prostitutes, thieves, down-and-outs, and, above all, homosexual love. Scenes from performances of his plays, along with documentary footage and readings, supplement GenetÔÇṣ own commentary on his many years in FranceÔÇṣ reformatories and prisons and his writing philosophy.
