Summary
Barack Obama came to office promising a change in tone from the foreign policy of George W. Bush, and greater engagement with adversaries. In this 2010 debate, panelists consider the early manifestations of that policy, and the likely results. Supporters say Obama moved toward prudence and realism, and that his personal global appeal has value to America. Opponents say he demonstrates weakness against adversaries like Iran and Russia, making allies feel insecure, and that he overvalues rhetoric as a foreign policy tool. Obama's caution, his deliberateness, and his willingness to at least try to negotiate with even our bitterest enemies won him the Nobel Peace Prize less than a year after taking office. But is love and understanding enough to lead? Might our adversaries see the president's coolness as uncertainty and his deliberativeness as weakness? Does Obama's foreign policy spell America's decline?
