Summary
The baby's skeleton begins as fragile membranes and cartilage, but after month 3 the membranes and cartilage begin changing into bone. In month 2 the fetus' skeleton is made up of thin membranes, which are about the thickness of paper tissue, and soft flexible cartilage like the kind found in the ear. Over time both of these turn into bone in a process called ossification. Ossification occurs in two ways. In the first type of ossification, membranes turn into bone as the membranes on the side and back of the fetal skull start to ossify. Bone tissue slowly grows over the areas where the membranes once were. Eventually the bone plates that are formed will grow together to form the cranial cavity, which will protect the brain. When the baby is close to birth, the skull bones still have gaps between them. These gaps, called fontanelles, allow room for the baby's brain to grow and enable the head to be compressed during delivery
